There is a principle used in Biblical hermeneutics called the Law of First Mention. Hermeneutics is the study of how to interpret the Bible. The Law of First Mention suggests that the first time a concept, theme, or word appears in the Scripture, it holds foundational truth and sets a precedent for its further development later in the text.

For example, the first time blood is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 4:10. God is speaking to Cain about his brother’s blood.

The verse reads;

And He said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries out to Me from the ground.”

This verse suggests the concept that blood is alive, or has life, and it has a voice that God can hear. As one reads the Bible in Leviticus 17:11 the following is noted ;

For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul.

All of chapter 17 speaks of the sanctity of blood.

Something similar can be derived from the first words a person speaks when an event occurs. It could be news received that evokes a verbal response, or it could be a sudden tragedy or surprise. Those words get put into the atmosphere, and the power you have placed in them goes to work accomplishing what you sent them to do.

The treasure that a person has stored up in their heart is what will come out of their mouth.

We are made in the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:26; Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”).

He speaks, and by faith, what He says comes to pass. We have the same creative power within us, so we must be mindful of the words we utter first when our heart speaks before our mind can intervene.

Proverbs 18:21 says;

Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.

The fruit that our spoken words bear is what we will eat. Fill your heart with God’s words so that when you find yourself in a sudden situation, the first words out of your mouth will speak life and bless God instead of speaking death and curses over yourself.

This is such a powerful reminder that our words carry weight and should never be taken lightly. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, we speak from our emotions instead of allowing the Word of God to guide our response. What we continually store in our hearts will eventually find its way into our conversations. May we learn to speak life even when circumstances seem difficult. Our words should reflect our faith in God rather than our fear of what we see. Thank you for sharing this important spiritual lesson.

I love how this message challenges us to examine our everyday conversations. Sometimes we pray for better circumstances but continue speaking words of defeat over ourselves. We must learn to bring our speech into alignment with biblical truth and trust God even when we cannot see the outcome. This does not mean ignoring reality, but choosing not to let fear have the final word.

Indeed, faith should influence not only what we believe but also how we speak. It is easy to declare God's goodness when everything is going well, but our words are especially important during seasons of uncertainty. We must learn to trust His character even when our circumstances are difficult to understand. Speaking with faith does not mean pretending that pain does not exist; it means refusing to let pain erase our hope in God. May His promises remain in our hearts and guide our responses. Let us speak with confidence in His goodness and wisdom.

What a profound reminder that our words reveal what is happening within us. We cannot consistently speak life when our hearts are continually fed by negativity and fear. That is why daily fellowship with God and meditation on His Word are so important. The more we allow His truth to shape our thinking, the more our speech can reflect His wisdom. May we learn to choose our words carefully, especially when emotions are high.

Spiritual maturity is reflected not only in what we know about the Bible but also in how we respond when life tests us.
