The Lord Jesus wants us to be compassionate towards people in general, but He was clear about how we are to perform charitable deeds. In Matthew 6:1-4, He spoke about giving. All around, there are people desiring to be recognized for their charity. They have television commercials touting their acts of compassion and constantly ask for donations so the people will continue to receive from them. They parade pictures of sad faces and destitution to draw upon your emotions of compassion. There are many who expect to be recognized for their philanthropy to classes of people that are less fortunate. And the world is glad to host lavish galas in honor of them.
Jesus stated very clearly, “1Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward from your Father in heaven. 2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. 3 But when you do a charitable deed, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4 that your charitable deed may be in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will Himself reward you openly.”
His intent on doing these things secretly is to protect the dignity of the recipients. Do not parade their faces or their desperate situation around for others to see. They truly do not want to be in this position of lack and most people in those situations would much rather provide for themselves. Give to people out of the abundance of your heart and wallet but do it quietly. Do it with respect for the ones you are giving to. God the Father sees what you are doing, and He will reward you openly. Others will see you being rewarded and wonder to themselves, why are they so blessed? What is the secret of why God is so good to them?
Be an example to others but do it without drawing attention to yourself. It will richly reward you!

This is such a needed reminder. It's easy to say "I give because I love people," but our actions (and how public we make them) often reveal what we're really after — recognition or reward. Thankful for this challenge to check my heart.

The point about protecting the dignity of the recipient is something I don't hear often enough. True generosity isn't just about the giver's humility — it's about honoring the person on the receiving end too. Great word.
