The love of Jesus is so deep that we, as humans, cannot grasp how it affects us. Let's review a
couple of scriptures that indirectly speak to this. In Revelation 21:21, a description of the New
Jerusalem is given concerning the gates.

“The twelve gates were twelve pearls; each individual gate was of one pearl. And the street of
the city was pure gold, like transparent glass.”

How can the gates of pearl be used to describe the love of Jesus Christ? To explain that, it is
important to understand how pearls are created. Oysters live on the floor of the oceans where the
water is brackish. This is a region where the fresh and salt waters mix. The formation of a pearl
begins when an irritating object is introduced into the habitat of the oyster muscle.

The oyster will begin to cover this irritation with a product called nacre. Over time, when enough
layers of nacre have been applied, a pearl is formed.

If we apply this same natural process to the spiritual realm, from which the city of New
Jerusalem will come, you can see that in order to have gates of pearl that are large enough to
stand as gates, a very uncomfortable process had to occur. Over the existence of Man, we have
inserted enough irritation into God’s heart that He created 12 enormous pearls as a result of that
pain. He placed those pearls as reminders to Himself of the sacrifice He gave to give us a place
in which to spend eternity with Him.

It is important to note that in verse 25, the scripture states the following;

“Its gates shall not be shut at all by day (there shall be no night there).”

God has opened His heart, and it will never be shut to prevent us from having access to Him
through these gates that pain formed.

His love is completely beyond our limited ability to understand or grasp.

Rejoice, for you are greatly loved!
